Jesus was ready and willing to go to the house of the Roman centurion to cure his servant (Matthew 8. 6). He continues today his ministry to people in the Armed Forces and their families. Being a chaplain in the Army, Navy or Air Force is a special challenge. As a non-combatant, he serves Catholics who have chosen the Armed Forces as a way of life. They and their families have as much right to the Gospel and the Sacraments as anyone else, and they have their own special needs. The chaplain ministers to a young or youngish, rather rootless and mobile community. His own ministry is a very mobile one; he is often on the move to different groups, or from one country to another. He celebrates Mass anywhere from a settled base to a field or on board a ship. Wherever he finds himself, his role is that of any priest: to bring together a community of faith, sharing the life and mission of Jesus himself. The young recruits will need a special kind of spiritual and moral leadership. Once again the chaplain works in a team with all those responsible for the care of these young men and women.
